What is sent to translation providers

OPEN: not decided yetLast updated

On this page

Machine translation sends text to an outside translation provider. This page says what is sent.

What is sent#

What is never sent#

Site keys, API keys, account or user numbers, email addresses, visitor IP addresses, and page addresses that carry a query.

Which providers#

The product has engines for DeepL, Google Cloud Translation, a language-model service and an open translation model. Which of them are offered, where they process data, and whether their terms forbid keeping or training on your text are OPEN. Each provider must be checked before it is listed. A public list of providers and a notice period for changes are planned: OPEN.

Your page text may contain personal data#

If a page shows a name, an order number or an email address, that text can reach the provider and then your published files. To reduce the risk:

Options that are meant to exist#

A way to leave out parts of the site from machine translation, and an account mode with no outside provider at all (human and memory only, or your own engine), are required by the design. Whether both exist in the finished product is OPEN.

Your own provider key#

With your own key, text goes to that provider under your own agreement. See Word packs and your own provider keys.

Hand-written translations#

A translation you type yourself is not sent to a provider.
